Boston City Seal is adopted.
January 2, 1823
Designed by John Penniman, its motto is Sicut Patribus Sit Deus Nobis (from 1 Kings, viii., 57, “God be with us as He was with our fathers”), followed by the inscription: Bostonia Condita, A.D. 1630. Civitatis Regimine Donata, A.D. 1822. The design of the seal is changed slightly when it appears in what is known as the “First Revision” of the city’s laws and ordinances published in 1827.
